Bachelor of Arts Degree A bachelor of arts degree, also known as a BA degree, is an undergraduate degree granted from universities and colleges. The bachelor of arts degree is considered a liberal arts degree whose purpose is to provide general knowledge in mainly non-scientific subjects. Areas of study might include courses in the Humanities, including Literature, Foreign Language, History, Arts, and Philosophy. Other classes would be the Social and Behavioral Sciences, such as Economics, Psychology, or Political Science. The typical time frame to obtain a bachelor of arts degree is 4 years, although some students finish within 3 years or take as long as 5 years. While specific degree requirements vary by school, most schools require at least 120 units to receive the bachelor of arts degree, with a certain number of classes designated as upper division. Students must first complete a general studies or core curriculum program. During the second year of study, students must declare a major, which is an area of interest, and take the specified number of related courses. A bachelor of arts degree provides options for students upon graduation. Some may continue their education and receive a master's or doctorate degree. Other students opt to enter the workforce in such fields as education, journalism, or business. Not only is a BA degree more lucrative, the broad based education prepares students to be well rounded, culturally knowledgeable, and equipped with communication and critical thinking skills.
